284 Stuart Street is under threat of demolition, and the Southern Heritage Trust needs your help to save it.
This grand Arts and Crafts-style mansion is a significant example of architect Edmund Anscombe's work. Anscombe designed many other Dunedin landmarks, including nearby Otago Girls' High School and several bluestone buildings in the city.
Completed in 1920 for a prominent department store owner, this house is a key part of the heritage streetscape, sitting directly across from the Category 1 listed King Edward Court.
Developers plan to replace this historic home with an apartment block. However, once demolished, there is no guarantee that anything will be developed on this site. Without protection under the council’s District Plan, its loss will set a dangerous precedent.
We are seeking the retention and restoration of this house. We urge the owners to reconsider incorporating this home into any new development in a sympathetic manner, rather than focusing solely on maximum profit.
You can help by signing this petition, which will be presented to the council and the owners to advocate for the home's retention and restoration.
Our heritage and city’s beauty are not for sale. We, the citizens of Dunedin, must protect our city’s architectural and economic assets. Sign this petition to show developers that we mean business and will not stand by as our city’s unique character is destroyed.
