VISIONS FOR DUNEDIN: CAPTURING EARLY PORT CHALMERS THROUGH THE LENS 

Port Chalmers developed rapidly during the 19th century. As the gateway to Otago, its port facilities had to respond to increasing demands of trade, and the repair and maintenance of visiting ships. The facilities that the town had to offer also evolved, reflecting this growing importance.

This talk will use an array of beautiful early photographs to capture these changes and the stories of the people who shaped, lived and worked there. Along the way we will see what still remains from these early days.

SPEAKER: Jonathan Howard uses historic images, along with documentary and physical evidence, to inform understanding of the people, architecture and internal history of historic sites and the wider development of cultural landscapes. Through this work he has become increasingly interested in interpreting the wider value held in individual photographs and collections.
